Questions

What riders ask about Ride Beyond

Ride Beyond is a free motorcycle route planner and navigation app for iPhone, routing in 35 countries of mainland Europe. These are the questions riders ask most.

Is Ride Beyond free?

Yes. Ride Beyond is free to download and everything in it is free: route planning, turn-by-turn navigation, offline routes, ride recording and Garmin import. There is no subscription and there are no ads. If a way to support the app is added later, it will be optional and nothing will be locked behind it.

Which countries does it cover?

The map covers the world. Route planning, place search and turn-by-turn navigation cover 35 countries of mainland Europe: Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark (Jutland), Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland and Vatican City.

Islands without a road link (Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, the Balearics, Crete and the ferry islands), the UK, Ireland, the Nordic countries apart from Jutland, Turkey and countries further east are not routed yet.

Is there an Android version?

Not yet. Ride Beyond is on the App Store for iPhone (iOS 15 or later). There is no Android app on Google Play. You can plan routes in any browser at ride-beyond.duckdns.org/app, without navigation.

Does it work offline?

Yes, where it matters on a ride. Download a route with its map corridor and you can navigate it in airplane mode. Recording works without signal and syncs when you are back online. Planning a new route and searching for places need a connection.

Does it work with Garmin?

Yes, for your rides. Connect Garmin once under Profile, Garmin: the app signs in to Garmin Connect from your phone and imports your motorcycle rides on its own, and your Garmin password goes to Garmin, never to Ride Beyond. You do not need a Garmin: the phone records rides by itself. Any ride exports as GPX, TCX or FIT, and you can import GPX tracks. Ride Beyond is not affiliated with Garmin.

How do curvy routes work?

Pick Moto mode and the planner prefers twisty, hilly, paved backroads over main roads and motorways. A slider runs from Efficient, close to the car route, to Scenic, which trades time for corners and climbs. Moto stays on asphalt, apart from the last stretch to a pin that itself sits on gravel. A scenic route is kept only while it stays reasonable: at full Scenic it may be at most about 1.9 times the Efficient distance, otherwise the planner eases the slider back. You see the asphalt, gravel and path split before you ride.

Can it plan off-road routes? Is that legal?

Adventure mode plans routes over gravel roads, forest tracks and paths, with a slider from Rally (fast, wide gravel) to Enduro (technical tracks and paths) and a switch for singletrack.

Routes follow OpenStreetMap access data, so ways marked as closed to bikes or as military ground are left out. The map can be wrong or out of date, and rules for motor vehicles on forest roads differ by country, so the signs on the ground and local law always decide where you may ride.

Does it avoid national parks and protected areas?

In the next version, now in testing: a Protected areas map layer, a notice when you drop a pin inside one, and off-road routes that keep out of strictly protected areas and off dedicated bike trails. A Motorcycle trails layer shows marked trails and motocross and enduro parks.

Can it suggest a ride when I do not have a destination?

Yes. Say how much time you have and the app suggests loops that fit, on road or off road, from where you are, or plan around a place you want to see.

Does it support CarPlay or Android Auto?

No, neither today. Navigation runs on the phone, and keeps going with the screen off, on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island.

Can I ride with friends?

Yes. Friends see each other on the map while riding, if they choose to share, and share rides with photos in a friends-only feed. Group rides come in the next version: one route, one GO for everyone, and everybody's position on the way.

What about privacy?

Your rides are stored on a server in the EU and never sold. There are no ads and no third-party analytics or trackers, in the app or on this website. Privacy zones hide the places you choose, and Profile, Settings, Delete account removes your account and all its data. The details are in the Privacy Policy.

How much battery does it use?

The screen stays on while the app is open, like any riding sat-nav, so charge the phone on the bike for long rides. When the battery runs low, the 3D map switches to 2D. Outside a ride, leaving the app stops GPS.

How does it compare with Calimoto, Kurviger and REVER?

They are older, run on Android too, route worldwide and have far larger communities. Ride Beyond is new, iPhone only and routes in mainland Europe, but navigation, offline routes and off-road routing are free. The comparison page has the details, with sources.
