The specifics
- Romania, forests: the Forest Code in force since January 2025 says public access to forests with self-propelled vehicles is forbidden; organised sports, recreation and tourism events can be allowed outside protected areas, on specially marked routes, with the approval of the administrator or owner [1] [2].
- Romania, other unpaved roads: unpaved public roads that are not forest roads, such as many village roads, are ordinary public roads under traffic law. Private land needs the owner’s consent.
- Protected areas: national parks, nature reserves and Natura 2000 sites have their own rules, often stricter. Check the park’s rules before riding off tarmac inside one.
- France: motor vehicles are banned outside roads in the public road network, rural roads and private roads open to public traffic (Environment Code, L362-1) [3].
- Elsewhere in Europe the rules differ by country and often by region. Signs on the ground, a forest or park office and local riding clubs are good sources.
- Legal places to ride hard: motocross and enduro parks, organised events, and trails signed open to motorcycles.
Honest limits
- What Ride Beyond does: it plans from OpenStreetMap and leaves out ways tagged as military ground or closed to all vehicles.
- What it does not do: it does not catch every way closed only to motor vehicles, and it does not apply national forest laws. A forest track can appear in an Adventure route even where forest roads are closed by default, as in Romania. The map can also be wrong or out of date.
- Keeping off-road routes out of strictly protected areas is in the next version, now in testing, not in the App Store version yet.
- You are responsible for checking that you may ride where a route goes, and for any fine or damage. The Terms say this in full.
Related questions
Does Ride Beyond tell me whether a track is legal?
No. It leaves out ways the map marks as military ground or closed to all vehicles, but it does not know every access rule and does not apply national forest laws. Local signs and laws come first.
Can I ride a forest road in Romania with permission?
The Forest Code allows organised sports, recreation and tourism events on specially marked routes, outside protected areas, with the approval of the forest’s administrator or owner. Ask the local forest district before you go.
Where can I ride off-road legally?
On unpaved public roads where traffic law allows it, in motocross and enduro parks, at organised events, and on trails signed open to motorcycles.
Is this legal advice?
No. It is a plain summary with dated sources. Laws change, so check the current text or ask a lawyer.
