The specifics
- Rally prefers fast, wide gravel and graded tracks; Enduro goes looking for technical tracks and paths, at the speeds an adventure bike actually rides them.
- Singletrack switch: keeps narrow paths in or out of the route.
- Dry or wet ground changes what it picks, and a ground-wetness layer estimates how muddy the tracks are today, next to the rain radar.
- A mode per leg: ride the asphalt to the hills in Moto mode and the hills themselves in Adventure, in one route.
- The surface split is shown before you ride: asphalt, gravel, path and unknown.
- Off-road loops that fit the time you have, from where you are.
- Offline: download a route with its map corridor and navigate it where there is no signal.
- Rally roadbooks: drive a recon and the roadbook builds itself, with tulips, distances and CAP headings, exported as OpenRally GPX, GPX or PDF.
- Access data: routes follow OpenStreetMap access tags and leave out ways marked as military ground or closed to all vehicles. They do not catch every way that is closed only to motor vehicles.
Honest limits
- Map data can be wrong or out of date. A track can be closed, private, washed out or far rougher than its tags say.
- Ride Beyond does not apply national forest laws. A forest track can be part of an Adventure route even in a country where forest roads are closed to motor vehicles by default. Checking that you may ride there is your responsibility; see Is it legal to ride off-road?
- Keeping off-road routes out of national parks and nature reserves is in the next version, now in testing, not in the App Store version yet.
- Difficulty is an estimate. Ride within your skill, and turn back when the ground says so.
- iPhone only, and routing covers mainland Europe only.
Related questions
What is the difference between Rally and Enduro?
Rally prefers fast, wide gravel and graded tracks. Enduro looks for technical tracks and paths. The slider sits anywhere in between, and the Singletrack switch decides whether narrow paths are allowed at all.
Can I mix road and off-road in one route?
Yes. Every leg of a route can use its own mode, so the ride to the hills can be Moto and the hills themselves Adventure.
Does it keep out of national parks?
In the next version, now in testing: off-road routes keep out of strictly protected areas, and a Protected areas map layer shows where they are. The App Store version does not do this yet.
Are the tracks it picks legal to ride?
Not always. Ride Beyond plans from open map data and does not know every access rule; forest roads in some countries are closed to motor vehicles by default. Local signs and laws come first, and checking them is the rider’s responsibility.
