Questions riders ask

Does Ride Beyond detect motorcycle crashes and call for help?

It detects possible falls, but it does not call for help. Ride Beyond looks for falls in a recorded ride, from the phone’s motion sensors and heart-rate patterns, and asks you afterwards to confirm or dismiss them. It does not call emergency services or alert anyone, so do not rely on it in an emergency.

The specifics

  • What it looks at: impacts from the phone’s motion sensors on rides the phone records, and heart-rate patterns when the ride has heart rate, such as a ride from a Garmin.
  • Two kinds of fall: a hard get-off, and a slow tip-over, which GPS alone cannot see.
  • You decide: each possible fall shows up for you to confirm or dismiss, and your answer is stored with the ride.
  • Falls help other riders: confirmed falls count toward a route’s difficulty grade in the anonymous community data, so a route people fall on grades harder.
  • On iPhone Crash Detection: Apple describes it as designed for severe car crashes involving passenger cars; motorcycles are not mentioned [2]. Do not count on it on a bike without checking Apple’s own terms.

Honest limits

  • It is best-effort. It can miss a real fall and flag something that was not one.
  • It is not an emergency service, it does not call anyone, and it does not alert friends.
  • Friends can see your live position only while you have the app open; sharing stops when you leave the app.
  • If you ride alone in remote places, use a device or service made for emergency alerts, and tell someone your route.

Related questions

Will Ride Beyond call for help if I crash?

No. It does not call emergency services or alert anyone. It finds possible falls in a recorded ride and asks you to confirm them afterwards.

Do I need a Garmin or a heart-rate strap?

No. On rides the phone records, the phone’s motion sensors are enough. Heart rate, for example from a Garmin ride, adds a second signal.

Why does it ask me to confirm a fall?

Because a bump, a dropped phone or a stop can look like a fall. Your answer keeps your ride record and the route grades honest.

What should I use if I ride alone?

A device or service built for emergency alerts, and tell someone your route and when you expect to be back. Fall detection in Ride Beyond is for your ride record, not for rescue.
